My So Called Life: Jaimie’s Intro

Posted by: Jaimie on: June 21, 2009

Currently I am 25 and I live in Northeast Philadelphia with five room mates who share my DNA. In other words I still live with my parents. I’m not living here to save money. I’m living here because I spent my college years in denial, and ended up $100,000 dollars in student loan debt. I don’t make as much as your average college graduate which is probably because I’m not one. I have 126 credits, but no degree yet to speak of.

When taking out student loans I was naive enough to believe that student loan lenders would work with my budget, which I was sure would be at least $30,000 upon graduation. I’m more in debt than most people because I bought into the notion that it really mattered what school you go to. I decided to go to Rutgers since it’s Psychology department was recommended to me by a professor at the community college I started school at. It didn’t matter to me that it was out of state, where I spent an extra ten grand a year. I was sure that it really mattered what the name of the school on my degree was. The only difference it made was that it was the only University to have Pre-calculus as a requirement for Psychology. In other words I spent $30,000 dollars to insure that I wouldn’t get a degree. Fortunately going to Rutgers wasn’t a complete waste. I met my best friend Jess there, and if I never get my degree for that reason it was worth every penny. I just wish I could afford all of those pennies.

I currently work as a secretary at a police station and after factoring in all my bills each month I am left with a little over $150 dollars. It doesn’t sound too bad until you factor it all the little things that pop up like car maintenance, doctor visits, and going out with friends. At about $40 dollars a week those things can really add up. After spending the last two years like this I’ve learned quite a few things about making the most of the little bit of spending money I have.

I’m hoping that with this site I can reach people in similar situations who can relate to my stories and help them make the most out of their own money problems. Not everything I write on here will be about finances, but the situation I am in is highly affected by my lack of a degree and an income that barely pays my bills.

Mostly what “MyBrokeAssLife” will be about for me is living in your mid-twenties and realizing that you haven’t accomplished what you set out to by now, and not quite feeling all grown up just yet. I will share on here all the accomplishments as well as setbacks I face along the way along with some fun commentary on pop culture and tips on saving money.
