Where will you be on April 29th, 2010 at 10 PM Pacific Time? This is the question that was answered for the character’s of ABC’s new hit show Flashforward. Which in turn leads them to ponder, how did they get there? And wakes us wonder if we would want to know. I can’t decide if I’m jealous of them or glad it’s only a television show.
I like to think that I already know where I would be. I should be two and half weeks away from finally getting my degree and in the process of finding a better paying job, but what if I flashforward to find myself in a different place entirely, further off course than I already am. Either way I think I would want to know. I’m the kinda person who has to fight the urge to read the last page of a book and searched my whole house to find my Christmas presents. I make plans weeks in advance.
Whether it’s a good or bad thing the world of Flashforward is fictional and the chances of it happening in reality are slim to none. I think this show will be a great success. The concept is similar to the idea of time travel, and I think that as humans we have a great interest in the idea of changing the past or preventing a flawed future. Who wouldn’t love to have the ability to go back and change that one thing that put your life off course.
I have often wondered where I would be if I had choose to go somewhere other than Rutgers. The only thing that stops me from going crazy over it is the relationships I have formed as a result. I don’t know where I would be with out Jess, but it’s not only the friends I met there. Meeting my boyfriend was the direct result of actions that wouldn’t have taken place had I gone elsewhere.
You’ll drive yourself mad thinking about these things, but since the days of Quantum Leap watching people go through this on television never ceases to entertain me. Especially when it’s acted out by such an amazing cast including Jack Davenport (Coupling), Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love, Elizabeth), John Cho (Harold and Kumar), Gabrielle Union (too many movies to pick from), and two Losties (Dominic Monoghan and Sonya Walger). I don’t know what my life will be in six months, but come April 29th I know I’ll be watching the season finale of this show and hopefully studying for my final finals as an undergrad.
